Leaky pipe in the basement

So usually you hear about pipes bursting in the winter because they freeze or something else just as terrible happens. You wouldn’t think that a pipe would burst in the warm months of summer but that is what happened to my husband and I. At first it started with just a leaking pipe but then all hell broke loose because we didn’t take this situation serious enough and we tried to take care of it ourselves. I recommend to not try to fix these things on your own and just call a professional plumber, this way you won’t have to endure the nightmare that we did.

My husband, Ted, first noticed the leak a month ago while he was down in our basement watching sports in his “man cave”, neither one of us even thought to call a plumber at this time because it was just a little trickle of a leak. Nothing serious. Nothing that caused a panic in us at this point. He just went around the pipe joints and started to tighten everything up, that seemed to take of things. Or so we thought. I went down there a couple of days later to do some laundry and I noticed that the pipe was leaking once again but this time it was worse than the first time. I just put a bucket under the leak to catch the water and had to dry up the wet spot that had taken root on the floor that was quickly making it’s way to our finished area. When Ted got home I explained the situation downstairs and he went down to see what he could do.

He came back up quickly and headed to the out to the hardware store to get something to fix the problem. He came back with some self fusing pipe tape. The guy at the store said that this should fix our problem. And it did. Until it didn’t. A few days later our pesky leak came back in full force. Apparently it was angry at us for trying to stop it because it was like a waterfall in our basement. After we turned off our water we decided to call a professional plumber to help us. This all happened at night but we waited until the morning to look for a company, we could deal without water for a few hours. We ended up finding a good local company the next day which happened to be on a Saturday so it took a while to have a place call us back. But we took the first one that called back.

The guy ended coming out to our house a couple of hours later and accessed the problem within a hour and had it solved within the next hour. After hearing what happened when it first started, the plumber then told us this was a simple issue and we could have done without all the hassle if we just called him in the first place. But who does that anyways? Don’t people always try to fix things themselves first? Just in case you can save some money? I guess in our case we weren’t knowledgeable enough to begin with but now we know what to do next time. So hopefully we do not have such a terrible time again!

Thanks all for listening,

Summer Time = Pool Time

When I was three years old my parents moved me and my brother into a house that had an in ground pool. My mother made me and my brother take swim lessons as soon as we moved in. My brother and I were in that pool every single day from memorial day when my parents opened it to Labor Day when my parents closed it. We would wake up eat breakfast put on her swimsuit, we would have to wait the required 30 minutes, then we were in that pool. Then we would take a break and eat our lunch and have to wait another 30 minutes and then we were back in until dinnertime.

Most night after dinner we were not allowed to go back out into the pool. We had to stay in for the night but on the rare occasion my parents let us go swimming once again after dinner. Those were the best days. My brother is two years older than me so once I graduated from high school my parents moved out of that house with the pool into a house that was on a lake. We totally upgraded! But at that point of our lives we didn’t go swimming in the lake as often as we did when we were younger in our pool.  We were both in college at that point and we were too busy hanging out with our friends to go swimming in the lake. But we did hang out there a lot. We went on the boat, poolwe went skiing and we would lay out in the sun with our friends. Now we have both moved out of her parents house and we are married and are in our own homes. The funny part about that is neither one of us live near a lake or have her pool in our backyard. I’m hoping to change that this upcoming summer. My husband didn’t have a pool growing up but I’m slowly convincing him that we need one in our backyard. We have a small house but our yard is huge. Our house sits on a double lot, I am not even certain what constitutes a double lot but it is a double lot none the less. Needless to say there is plenty of room for a pool. Whether it be above ground or in ground. I’m pushing for an in ground pool. He is not completely convinced yet that we need a pool. It’s hard to convince somebody that we actually need something like a pool but I’m working on it, because once you have a pool or lake growing up you always feel the need for one. It’s like always having a dog. If you grew up with the dog then you’re always gonna have a dog. At least that is how I feel.  I know that I would rather have an in ground pool but if push comes to shove he said that we can have one but it has to be in an above ground pool then we’re gonna get in above ground. This summer is almost over so I’m not pushing for one right now, that would just be sort of a waste.  I have all winter long to convince him about a pool so I’m hoping by next summer we have one somewhere in our backyard.

I was even talking to him about doing the installation by ourselves but after doing a bit more research I have realized it is probably not something that we should take on with out the help of a pro.  Who do you even call to install a pool?  Do you call a pool man lol?  Or do you call a plumber? Canton, Michigan is supposedly pretty strict about outdoor projects so I assume we will have to get some type of license not only for an in ground pool but even for an above ground one.…

Love the Water

Over the 4th of July weekend my brother and his family came into town to visit, they live in another state and they only coming to town every so often. So it’s always a good time when they come. It’s my brother, his wife and his two daughters, my nieces. My parents live on a lake so the girls spend pretty much the entire time in the water. They want to swim, they want to drive the boat, they want to go tubing, they want to do everything that has to do with the water. They are in and out of the water pretty much all day long, and the funniest part about that is that they hate putting wet swimsuits back on so my sister-in-law has to pack like five different bathing suits for each of them because they refuse to put on a wet bathing suit. So if they swim for little bit and get out to either warm-up or have a snack or do something and they change their clothes and then a little while later they want to go back in and that first swimsuit was wet they put on a dry swimsuit. We try to tell them that it doesn’t matter if your swimsuit is wet because you’re about to go into the water and you’re gonna be wet anyways but for some crazy reason they do not want to put on a wet swimsuit, it’s hilarious. One of the last night that they were in town we took the girls tubing, at first they were both on the tube together but then my older niece wanted to go by herself. When she was on the tube and my brother who was driving the boat, started to take off the tube completely submerged underwater and my niece flipped off the tube. I think it was a combination of her being too far forward on the tube and my brother taking off to slow because the tube went completely under the water, when she popped up she was terrified and was bawling her eyes out but she finally calmed down enough to grab the rope and we were able to pull her back on the boat. Needless to say she was done tubing after that. And if you think that’s too scary of an incident with her older sister that my younger niece would not want to get back on the tube, you would be wrong. My younger niece got on the tube after that and we pulled her around the lake for a little while.  It was getting late and getting dark and it took us 20 minutes to get her off of that tube. Days like this make me wish that my brother and his family lived in the same state as we did. That way we can have more of them.
